🛣️ Drive on the Left

In Jamaica, all motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road, except when overtaking. Be especially cautious on narrow or rural roads where lane markings may not be visible. All Patmar's vehicles are right-hand drive, so you'll easily adapt to local traffic flow.

🅿️ Parking in Montego Bay

When driving in busy areas like the Hip Strip or downtown, always use official paid parking lots. These zones are actively monitored during working hours. Parking permits can be purchased in nearby stores — just display yours clearly on the dashboard.

🚨 Emergency Contacts

The national emergency number in Jamaica is 119, though 911 may also work depending on your mobile provider. Vehicles with mobile phone add-ons come with important emergency numbers pre-saved, including local ambulance, fire, and police stations around Montego Bay.

💵 Currency Matters

For small purchases like gas, groceries, or souvenirs, it's often cheaper to pay in Jamaican Dollars (JMD). Exchange foreign currency at banks or cambios, which usually offer better rates than card transactions or hotel exchanges.

💳 Credit Cards & Payments

🛍️ Market Days & Traffic

Fridays and Saturdays are Market Days, and streets near Charles Gordon Market become congested with pedestrians and vendors. If you're exploring, park in a designated lot and walk, or plan alternate routes to avoid delays.

🚭 No Smoking in Public

Smoking cigarettes is prohibited in most public places across Jamaica. While marijuana was decriminalized in 2015, only individuals with medical or tourist permits can legally purchase and use it.

🦟 Bug Spray Is a Must

Due to Jamaica's warm, tropical climate, mosquitoes are common. Keep insect repellent handy, especially during the evenings or near coastal areas.

📵 Hands-Free Driving Only

Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal in Jamaica. The Road Traffic Act enforces fines of up to USD $250. Use a hands-free device or safely pull over before making a call.
